ARTIST: Kitagawa Utamaro

Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) is an ukiyo-e artist active in the Edo period. He is known to be the master of bijinga, images of courtesans and female beauties. He influenced the European artist, specifically impressionists, in the 19th century for his use of light and shade and the partial view in his works.

About the Print

The subjects of this work are the three famous beauties at the time: Takashima Ohisa, Naniwaya Okita, Tomimoto Toyohina. It was said that becoming the subject of Utamaro's work was a status, as well as a way to become popular.
