ARTIST: Utagawa Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), also known as Ando Hiroshige, was an ukiyoe artist active in the Edo period. He is known to have influenced artists such as van Gogh and Monet and the indigo blue used in his print is highly valued. Famous works include The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido and One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.

About the Print

From the series of One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, 'Sudidobashi Surugadai' depicts the Suidobashi bridge crossing over the Kanda river connecting to the Surugadai area. Carp streamers in the fore and the background tells that it is around the time of the Boy's Festival (May 5th).
